Using up all those plastic grocery bags

I try to be good.  I really do.  I try to remember my reusable bags every time I go to the store. But somehow I end up with a cabinet full of plastic grocery bags.  Even when you bring a bunch of your own bags it always seems the bag person finds some excuse to put something in plastic.

So we tried to reduce, now it’s time to reuse. I have a few ways to use up my plastic bags.

As bathroom garbage can liners- at least it’s getting one more use before getting tossed, right?

As fabric. You can iron your bags together and make a sewable fabric.  Here’s a tutorial on how to do that: http://letitunravel.com/2011/02/28/recycled-plastic-bag-to-fabric-tutorial/

And here they make plastic fabric in cool colors, https://dallasmakerspace.org/wiki/Recycled_Plastic_Fabric

What to do with your new matieral? All kinds of things.  Wet bags come to mind. If you cloth diaper you know how important those are.  Even if you don’t, a waterproof bag could be really useful for the beach or pool.

As stuffed animal stuffing.  I figured this one out one day when I really needed something to stuff a toy I just made for my daughter. Cut up the bags, roll them in tubes, or just jam them in.  It makes the stuffy surprisingly squishy soft, while still having a slight crinkle sound that babies eat up.

  1. YOU CAN MAKE FABRIC FROM THOSE UGLY OLD PLASTIC BAGS????????!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my goodness!!!!!!!!! I can NOT WAIT to try that!!!!! Thank you so so so much!!!!!!! (lol please excuse my excessive excitement! I think this is just SO cool!)

  2. Having pets, I use the bags to pick up and throw away their waste, reuse as when taking food to my dad’s or daughter’s house, and over the sock and under the boot for the kiddies in snow.

  3. Very great ideas! I always try to bring my reusable bags to the store with me and when I do remember I forget to use them! I usually use mine as trash bags and save them for yard sales.

  4. Wow, the fabric idea is so inventive! I’m definitely going to have to try that because I’ve got a huge stash of bags in my kitchen 🙂

  5. I never thought of using bags as fabric! Awesome! I think I might create the fabric, cut it into strips and then crochet it into something, such as a coaster or even a water proof bag.

  6. We are the same way…for the most part, we have reusable bags, but sometimes we get plastic. We use them for bathroom and office trash cans. Also, to use around the pool or lake – easy to toss wet suits or towels in. Great idea with the toy. Never would have thought of that.

  7. I also do my best to reuse plastic bags ( as trash can liners or anything else I can think of) but they pile up a lot faster than I can use them. I absolutely love the idea you can make fabric out of them! I’ve never heard of this and, honestly I am not super crafty, but I definitely want to give this a try!
